Friday, August 28, Backed up on the road to Sandy Hook On a warm summer Sunday, we weren’t surprised to run into people just trying to make it to Sandy Hook. What surprised us was how long ago they’d started their trip and the massive delay they suffered — maybe New Jersey’s first huge traffic jam.
Certainly, it was the biggest hassle anyone has experienced in trying to get to the shore. We’d started the day avoiding all things beach. In fact, we were at a sod farm in eastern Mercer County, looking for ‘grasspipers’ – a general description of the shorebirds that hang out in grasslands. The fields weren’t quite as productive as we’d hoped, leading us to wander a bit aimlessly until we found ourselves in the western Monmouth County community of Allentown.
Full of Colonial, Georgian and Federal-style buildings dating to the earliest days of the nation, Allentown was built around an old grist mill on Doctors Creek. A picturesque mill pond offers a nice focal point to downtown and, of course, is irresistible to intrepid birders. The part downtown isn’t quite so interesting — it’s the part that extends back to the residential areas that’s tempting. Finding the right road wasn’t hard — it’s called Lakeview Drive.
Something went wrong…
It was just a few years ago that the Passaic River was one of the top 10 most polluted rivers in the US. Now the stretch near Jockey Hollow in Mendham the water quality is so much better now it is in part of the Wild Tout Program. As you might guess the trout fishing in this part of the river is good.

The February derailments of railcars carrying an estimated 29, in Bakken crude oil led to explosions, water pollution, property damage, and hundreds of resident evacuations. The crude oil derailment and explosion caused a state of emergency in West Virginia and contaminated two water intakes nearby. Rail cars burned for days and damages could cost tens of millions of dollars to clean up.
This penalty is not a deterrent and these accidents will keep on happening. The bill provides catastrophic liability if a derailment happened and requires the railroad to have a warning system in place and a contingency plan that will deal with any potential spill or accident. Residents near the CSX accident described it as being in hell, as if an atomic bomb went off. The explosions and fires destroyed adjacent homes.
Local officials declared a state of emergency, nearby water intakes were shut down, and 1, residents in the area were evacuated. Drinking water supplies were limited since the oil had spilled into the icy river and forced two water intakes to close. Some of the oil discharged during and following the train derailment flowed into the Kanawha River and Armstrong Creek.
If it happened near the Raritan River, it could shut down water intakes there for weeks if not months. At any speed, transporting Bakken crude is a ticking time bomb.

The seven-mile stretch of spectacular ocean and bay beaches are excellent for surf casting, swimming, and relaxing on the sand. Nature lovers will revel in the — plus species of migratory birds, as well as the pristine holly forest. Parking lots fill up early on weekends in the summer, causing the gates to close. It is recommended that those who would like to spend some time in Sandy Hook stay in Highlands, which is located on the hill across the bay.
Highlands is the highest point on the entire eastern seaboard, and during the height of Prohibition became a bootleggers paradise. A sleepy seaside town, Highlands lost many vacationers to glitzier towns such as Atlantic City during the second half of the 20th Century.
