Waltham Watch Company

The Model was first made in Prior to that year, pocket watches were not made of standard parts and repairing and making the watches was difficult and expensive. The American Watch Company created and marketed the first successful industrialized watch. Before , The Boston Watch Company made and sold approximately 5, movements and 4, cases before it failed financially, and in the factory at the time there was an estimated 1, watches in various stages of production that had yet to be finished into complete watches. In the spring of , the Boston Watch Company did not have enough money to stay running and was forced into insolvency. A small amount of the total production of model movements were fitted with a stemwind mechanism from the factory. The earliest stemwind movements were fitted with no reversing clutch on the winding stem, and had no setting mechanism; these early movements required using a key to set the time. Later stemwind movements were lever setting, with a unique design of set lever which pivoted out from the movement rather than pulling out.

They were the largest watch manufacturer in the United States for over years. The factory opened for business in and Elgin were well known for making the highest quality watches. Along with Waltham they in essence dominated the watch market in the USA. The good news is that because they produced so many, it makes them ideal for collectors. It also makes them still affordable for anyone. For me it is buying a piece of history.

Another British Military watch on the blog this time, and something of an enigma. The watch is very similar in style and size to the W10 made by Hamilton from and subsequently by CWC from and it shares all of the attributes required to adhere to the strict standards for military use. The case is opened by removing the crystal and splitting the two-piece stem, and inside is a 17 jewel, manually wound calibre made by A.

It has a higher beat rate, 28, bph as opposed to 21, bph, and also has a micro-adjustment mechanism mounted on the balance cock for more accurate regulation. Here is a picture of a cal. In the picture above, the stem is pushed all the way in — in the winding position — and so the stem presses on hacking lever, it pivots around the fixed axis just above the castle wheel and the lower arm of the lever releases the balance allowing it to rotate freely.

The watch arrived in decent condition and needed no more than a movement service, a crystal polish and an ultrasonic clean for the case, so here it is all back in one piece. So, who made these watches? With no markings on the dial, movement or inside the case, the jury is still out. It is thought that around were made, all of which were issued in

Brief History: Gruen Watch Company

This was from a paper handed to me by a colleague who discovered it by chance several years ago. No author I’m afraid, but it is a fascinating read. In the attention of a number of public spirited citizens and capitalists of Springfield was called to the great advantage which would result to the city from the establishment and conduct of manufacturing industries. Even in those days men who were what we now term promoters were keenly active in various lines, and one of the pioneers in this profession was Mr.

He came to Springfield in and pointed out the benefits to the city, and the very possible and probable profits to be secured for the stockholders, of a company organised for the manufacture of watch movements. Attention was directed to the benefits which would come to the city in the establishment of an industry in which the chief expense of production was the high wages paid to skilled labor and in the bringing to the city of a large number of skilled mechanics and their families.

In the attention of a number of public spirited citizens and capitalists of Springfield was called to the great advantage which would result to the city from the establishment and conduct of manufacturing industries. It is a small selection of often unidentified old movements that I have been able to positively identify. I don’t intend to show movements with their makers names on them, because they are already identified. The idea of this page is to try to identify otherwise unknown movements found in the type of watches that I collect, which are principally Great War era men’s wristwatches with 12 or 13 ligne movements.

It is often difficult to identify movements from the shape of the top plates or bridges alone. Although some movements such as the IWC calibre 64 leap out to the experienced eye, other are less easy because of similarities between the products of different manufactures, and manufacturers altering bridge shapes for different customers. In fact, the apparently huge variety of Swiss watches is explained by this phenomenon: Manufacturers altered the appearance of their movements by changing the top plates, but the basic layout remained much the same.

Note that the setting lever screw is an exception to the rule about screw placement, it can be in different places in stem set and pin set varieties of the same movement, or absent altogether if the keyless work is negative set. The shape of the cocks and bridges is more of an aesthetic consideration; so long as all the pivot holes and screw holes are in the same places, then bridges of very different shapes can be freely interchanged.

Some manufacturers produced many different movements with the same basic layout and identical train and keyless work components, but with different patterns of cocks and bridges.

The information below was gathered and amalgamated from various sources on the Internet. Sadly, I didn’t keep a record of where it all came from, but none of it is my own work. I can at least say thanks to Agent Orange, JoT, “mach 0. I can’t vouch for the accuracy of any of this information, but I’ve found it useful as a first step in estimating dates of manufacture for some of the watches in my collection. Serial numbers may be found on movements, case backs or dials depending on the make, model and age of the watch in question.

It’s not unusual to find movements that are one or two years older than the cases containing them.
