Remedies for the Clarinet’s “Sore Throat” by Deborah Check Reeves Curator of Education and Woodwind Instruments It has long been recognized that the placement of the tonehole for the register vent on the clarinet is a compromise. If the register vent was only to function as a facilitator for overblowing twelfths, the vent should be much smaller than it is and placed higher on the instrument. Ever since some of the earliest clarinets were made, the throat B-flat has been fingered using the register vent key and the A key. In order to obtain a clear sounding and in-tune B-flat, the register vent should really be larger than it is and placed lower on the instrument. So, in order to accommodate the dual function of the register vent, its size and placement is a compromise. Most players have worked out a better sounding B-flat than the fuzzy and sharp note that results from the compromised tonehole by manipulating their embouchures and adding resonance fingerings. Even with these manipulations, however, many players and makers are dissatisfied with the outcome and have sought a cure for the clarinet’s “sore throat” note.

City Noir — John Adams In jazz and popular music[ edit ] Saxophones are also commonly used in jazz music , where it is one of the signature sounds, as well as an iconic image used to denote the style. Beginning in the early 20th century, saxophones became popular in dance orchestras, which were not jazz ensembles but influenced the format of the big swing era bands that were soon to follow. The arrival of the saxophone as a jazz instrument is attributed to tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins ‘ stint with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra starting in The saxophone was soon embraced by Chicago -style musicians who added it, along with chordal instruments such as pianos, banjos, and guitars, to the trumpet-clarinet-trombone-bass-drums ensemble format inherited from New Orleans jazz.

The swing bands of the s utilized arrangements of saxophone and brass sections playing off each other in call-response patterns.

A very fine condition Buffet E11 C clarinet, in Grenadilla wood. The pads are mainly white leather, in very good condition, with some cork pads on the upper joint. The wood has no cracks or repairs, but there is one chip to the outer edge of the lower tenon of the upper joint, see photo This chip has no affect on the response, and is completely hidden when the instrument is assembled. The E11 C is Buffet’s semi-professional model, and this example has matching serial nos.

The Silver plated key work is in excellent condition, with only light scratches. All pieces are matching and original. Current Buffet E13’s and E11’s are giving a lot of trouble with shrinkage and wood movement, these problems commenced when Buffet moved the manufacture of these models from Germany back to the old Leblanc factory in France.

Fortunately this instrument pre-dates this; it was made in Germany. The E11 C is an ideal purchase for the player who wants to use the same mouthpiece that they currently use on their Bb instrument, as the instrument tunes well with all standard French bore Bb m’pieces. This instrument has had only one owner who, having used it to succesfully audition for a performance course at University, then upgraded to a professional model clarinet.

Which model is this Buffet Crampon Oboe?

Hopefully Buffet will be able to come up with something more definitive. I’d be willing to bet that it’s a lot more current than and I already made the comment about 60s and 70s oboes being from Marigaux. First, for whatever reason I thought that OP didn’t post the serial number. I plead temporary blindness.

Second, I’d think that the horn isn’t from Marigaux.

Hawkes and Son made saxophones in their factory in Edgeware near London. I saw this in an eBay auction and put a bid on it. Many instrument manufacturers from the nineteenth onwards made high and low pitched instruments. Looking at the pictures now I realise that I completely failed to see that this horn had a solid silver bell and neck — like a King Silversonic.

If I had I might have been more tempted to keep it. I had some trouble getting a refund for this sax, but took some photos, which I think are useful for those thinking of owning a Hawkes XX Century horn. Sell the instrument on its historical importance, but not on its playability. The Instrument It is a silver plated brass alto, with a silver bell. The XX Century model was the main one made by the company up until the time it merged with Boosey to form the company Boosey and Hawkes in around Actually the horn was in surprisingly good condition or perhaps not so surprising as no one could have played it in tune with any modern instrument.

It also has a fascinating octave mechanism, which can be seen in the photos. Hopefully it has now formed part of collection of a non-player, because it is excellently well manufactured. Saxophone making was a specialist craft and the in early years many of the makers travelled the globe.
